This little bird-cage style lantern was discovered just recently and had for a great bargain. There did exist a thin tin decorative border around the base that just didn’t seem to match- so- off it came!

My Blogger friend Brenda over at Cozy Little House (who’s beautiful photos and clean, cozy blog you must see!) invited me to participate in an interesting little bit of Blogging Fun (Thanks Brenda!) ; to go back in time and select the sixth ever photo published in a blog, from my blog and to then “re-purpose it”; bring it current, bring it forward with perhaps a little splash of new ideas…

These images of outdoor gardens reveal a number of wonderful pieces that truly represent what I think is so beautiful, bringing a little 'indoor', 'outdoor' in some cases, and in others there are period pieces; unique and elegant in their own special way.

If I could create a single short sequence that really reflects what appeals to me most in this arena; this would be it!

French Chaises; can still be found by collectors with a discerning eye- either unrestored in their original condition or, refurbished somehow, in some way that might suit your personal decor. I am a fool for old chairs of nearly any kind! Here are items made from chestnut or hazel wood; genuine, solid and practical [for the people and from the time-period they were made/ were popular (c. 1887)]. A lovely Adirondack; one of my favorites… named for the mountain range in New York and found primarily throughout New England as invented in the early 1900’s.

Springtime Picture Spree

First of all, a quick but heartfelt thanks to my sweet litle sister Lu; the party she hosted was such a good time! Our closest family and friends were there, we had some good fun and wine and lots of laughter! If we must get a little older, best to have something like this and family to share it with.

You are appreciated LuLu and I love you. Thank you too for all of those little birthday well-wishes I got from some of my blogging friends~

Next, some outdoor photos from around my backyard. The weather here has been sunny and temperate and overall, just beautiful. Springtime is upon us and Easter is near at hand, getting outside a bit seemed like the right thing to do!

Antique Medical Bag (and Boots?)

The classic doctor's bag is flat-bottomed with rounded sides, slightly elongated. Two large handles come together over the top for easy carrying. The mouth of the bag has a collapsible metal frame that springs open when handles are separated and tugged.

Genuine, antique doctors' bags like this one are considered collectors' items by some (I sure think so ; ) and can be found for sale at various prices depending on the shape of the bag, its history, and distinguishing characteristics or features like unique compartments or monogrammed initials. Doctors' bags with date-appropriate tools can also be found displayed in many history museums.

[While they may not seem to really ‘go’ together, they are from the same era and I thought they looked good paired for this little shot.]In the early 1900's a woman’s ankle was usually hidden from view by a long, flowing skirt but when woman wore what were known as 'high shoes' or boots such as these, their feet were doubly protected from prying eyes! My how things have changed…

Some boots of the period were laced through as many as 18 pairs of eyelets (!) while others were fastened with a dozen or more black glass buttons. (No wardrobe malfunctions here ; )

Shoes and boots alike often rode on 2-to-3-inch Louis XV heels. These are of the 2 inch variety. Brown leather and gray suede were most popular. (I'd like to plan on doing another post soon on just these neat boots/ their unique and wonderful look. I just love them!) Ciao~

Vintage Art; Showcased

Several years ago I was fortunate enough to visit an Estate Sale of sorts hosted by an actor named Craig Sheffer (you may remember him from Robert Redford's "A River Runs Through It" [1992]).

My husband had met him/ become his acquaintance at the gym where they both worked out. Mr. Sheffer had recently purchased some propereties in a neat little area not far from where we live (actually, not far from the famed Agoura Antique Mart!) called Malibou Lake, and was in the process of refurbishing them.

Of three homes that were either in escrow or under some level of renovation, I discovered [and was invited to acquire] these beautiful paintings. The residence they came from had just previously been owned by actress Elizabeth Montgomery from "Bewitched". Sort of neat.

The last image in this sequence is placed for you all to see what type of frames embrace each of the handsome paintings, and of course- I don't mind if you have a look at the pretty candleholder in the foreground ; )

Some of you may be thinking, 'Hey- wait a sec... This all looks just a tiny eensy weensy bit familiar'... Well- I've placed this link here so you can see why (and satisfy that little tinge of Deja Vu you might be feeling (just maybe).

What a neat little thing, this 101 thing... The Agoura Antique Mart is a special place here in Southern California who's goods are not only well-known, but well-respected and highly sought after. Booths are (for the most part) reserved so far in advance that you're lucky just to get onto the waiting list...!

From the warm and friendly service, knowledgeable staff and a most fantatsic depth and breadth of inventory, if you are ever in the area, you simply cannot miss it! Don't be surprised if you come across a favorite movie star, model or other celebrity type either, as the shop is just a short drive from Malibu- home to numerous Hollywood elite (!); they often come incgnito, but love the gorgeous, expansive showroom nonetheless.

You may have seen visions of it here too, or, if you have ever traveled to my sweet little sister LuLu's blog DustyLu Interiors (it was she- designer LuLu- after all, who helped influence me to begin blogging in the first place she and I have been going antiquing together for years...).

In any event- the proprietor of The Agoura Antique Mart is named Maria, and she has been a great help and excellent source inspiration not only to LuLu and I, but to countless others as well. She is kind, sweet, and an excellent businesswoman too. If/ when you get a chance to drop by, I am sure you will be pleasantly astonished!

Harvest of Hearts

I love hearts and heart-shapes (and have always loved Valentine's Day- I suppose though- what woman doesn't!), and decided to share some things that I've known, or found that represent them, or warm them.

Duplicated in nature and generated by the creativity of the artist and photographer alike.

Did you know the interesting aspects described in some Nordic Mythology that reference heart-shapes in the beuaty of a woman's physique? Stories of The Vikings are one of my husband's favorites (as his German and English heritage inspire him in there); I've enjoyed learning about their association of hearts with the female anatomy, and their passion...

Loving Gesture

I came home from running some errands yesterday and found this bowl filled with some fruit that had just earlier been purchased from a nearby Trader Joe's (do you have those where you are? Great little grocery marts, great values, such good organic/ and wonderful natural things to choose from... Sort of like a small-scale Whole Foods Market...). They were originally package in this funky blue box, and my husband's so cute, he put them in the thick crystal bowl, exactly the way they are- he said 'Just for Me'...

Such a loving little gesture; I thought it looked so pretty, and wanted to share.

Garage Sale Find; Before and After

Making some rounds to several garage sales during the end of this last month I came across this kitchen hutch that was the right price, but that needed a little makeover (not that it wasn't handsome as it was...). Just minor changes- nothing extensive, some costmetic adjustments that would allow it to blend in a bit better with my current arrangment(s).

After a little bargaining a price was arrived at that made everyone happy (things started just north of $125.00, but ended at $100) and away I went. Once home the two pieces were separated and lightly sanded.

Though it isn't obvious in this photo, the existing backing from the hutch's top-half was flimsy, stained and worn; in need of replacement and removed.

A quick coat of water-based primer on everything is next followed by two coats of a low sheen, water-based enamel (often called an 'Eggshell' finish, some prefer 'Satin' though the 'Eggshell' is just slightly more durable I believe)...

Two sections of some leftover 3/16ths in.'wainscotting-board' were measured, cut and prepared for the hutch's top-half new backing (creating a more stately look while adding stability/ rigidity).

Using small steel zinc-coated finishing nails versus even a medium-duty staple is more precise and yields not only a more sturdy, but a more lasting result. I used the smaller size in each of the corners, and to 'place' the backing, then the slightly larger size for the securing the ramaining area (one nail every 8 inches is adequate), following the pattern made by the back of the upper piece's frame, and the rear edge of each shelf.

Once the backing is attached it's time to see what they look like after being taken inside and 're-assembled'!

The intent of the second image here, was to try and show a little more of the linear texture of the 'wainscotting-board', the new backing...

And finally, viola, all done (finito!).

Fabulous Antique Find

I discovered this beautiful medicine cabinet with the perfect little glass knob, it's splendid decorative carving and amazing rose compilation and I knew right where it must go! With a light clean-up it's soft teal-green finish and sturdy construction did not dissapoint.
Though old, it was evidently well-kept and kept dry; its tiny brass hinges were not only intact and functioning smoothly, they appeared to have been expertly placed and kept polished.
Inside my daughters bathroom, it will accent the mellow ivory tones and hang handsomely above the wainscotting.

Mother, Friend, Confidant: An Introduction

She goes by 'mom', she's a friend to many and inspiration to all; loving, honest, hard-working and generous- she embodies so many of the things we all strive for, and we have such fun along the way!

Carmen left Naples, Italy and came to Southern California, the year was 1973. One of her four sisters Anna came ahead of her after marrying a handsome American GI near their family's hometown (Anna and her husband Patrick would lend a helping hand in Carmen's safe arrival and in getting established).

With less than a working knowledge of English and her two young children in tow (my brother Alberto was just under 3) she embarked on what would be a long and often difficult, if not painful life as the pursuit of her American Dream began to unfurl.
Our father Nino remained in Italy behind us as the rigors of his teenage marriage to my mother were too much for them both to effectively manage... A heartbreaking reality we were forced to cope with as we grew up, and to this day are still affected by; he passed away just two years ago leaving us behind with the sorrow of intermittent though not unaccomplished relationships.

Making her first home in a tiny bungalow in Reseda, CA. she took her first job on an assembly line in a electronics factory that is long since gone.
"Lo sono sola, me io non sono solo..." she said, determined not only to survive but to succeed.

Valetine's Day

Distinguished beauty, sophisticated and elegant, Sophia Loren i love! I guess lots of good things come from Naples- lqtm (laughing quietly to myself)... ~

Naturally beautiful; sexy but classy~

One of her cookbooks 'Recipes and Memories' is a favorite, it's collection not unlike much of what I saw growing up. My mom taught my sisters and me (and our only brother too [he grew up to become a renowned chef], our Alberto) and demanded the best from us; fresh ingredients and always homecooked meals. She still calls each of us every day to check-in and ask what's cookin! We feel spoiled- and thankful- having always been around such great food. There is nothing like coming home to the delicious smells of something tasty cooking in the kitchen, its good for the husband and good for the kids (and one of my most cherished memories from childhood).

Eggplant Parmesean is one of the most enjoyable, and, one of the most popular dishes in Italy. While Sophia's recipe ("Eggplant alla Parmigiana") is just a little different than the one we like to use, it's simplicity is attractive and the result is phenomenal. Try a slice of it inside some good fresh French bread: So Good!

"Eggplant alla Parmigiana"

(Serving for Four)

4 pounds eggplant

Extra-virgin oliver oil

Fresh basil leaves

Salt

Freshly ground black pepper

2 cloves of garlic

1 pound canned peeled and crushed tomatos

1 / 2 cup of freshly grated parmigiano cheese

1 pound of fresh mozzerella cubed

Cut eggplant lengthwise into 1/2-inch slices. Layer the slices on a large plate, sprinkling each layer with salt. Once all of the eggplant has been sliced and layered, cover with a piece of waxed paper and then place another plate (equally sized if possible) atop it (think of it as the 'final layer') and then something of weight-like a large can of food. This will help with the draining of excess moisture. It should be allowed to drain for 2 to 3 hours.

Meanwhile, heat about two large teaspoons of the oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic, when it's lightly browned add the tomatos and basil and cook until thick. Add salt & peper to taste.

Remove the plate/ weight from the eggplant, rinse the slices gently, and pat them dry. Cover the bottom of a large heavy skillet with olive oil and place it over high heat. Add the eggplant slices, browning them on both sides. Adjusting the heat and adding oil as needed. You may have to cook the eggplant pieces in more than one batch. Drain the cooked slices on paper towels and pre-heat oven to 350.

Lightly coat and oblong 9 x 12 inch oven-proof dish with tomato sauce, a layer of the eggplant slice over the sauce and sprinkle them with the cheese, then repeat until the dish is full (you should finish with a layer of sauce and cheese on top). Bake 15-20 minutes to heat-through and melt the mozzeralla. Serve at room temperature. Bon appétit!

Home today with the fireplace turned on and some delcious chicken soup on the stove; it's an incredible rainy day, but sure is cozy inside. They say it's never supposed to rain in Southern California, but we sure can use it ; ) This kind of weather sort of makes you want to stay in and cook, bake & eat! Nothing like a comfy day at home to inspire some new pictures of some things I hope you'll enjoy.

Resting atop a coffee table of mine is a neat old egg basket from the early 20th century. Pretty sunlight from a side window contrasts nicely with the lit candles. The basket also looks great with dried flowers, faux or fresh fruit, or small books.

Behind the wheel of an old Tea Cart (circa 1860) I picked up about 8 years ago sits a favorite silver tea set of mine. Though not nearly as old, it sure can start to look that way if not kept polished! (The ongoing debate about whether 'To Polish', or 'Not To Polish'...)

Just returned from a fun trip to Arizona for my mother-in-laws 70th birthday, it was a big suprise for her with close to 30 of her closest friends and loved ones. She loves Standadrd Poodles so the theme of the party was everything pink and poodle-y. Mamma mia. : )

Each of her sons spoke some kind words for a toast, and there was much visiting and laughter; everyone had such a good time. So thankful for her good health and happy marriage of more than 45 years!

The next morning we all had breakfast together, coffee and more good talk- we capped-off the trip with a quick visit to a local swap meet where I was hopeful to find something special; a unique nick-nack or decorative item of some kind... Turns out it was more of a people watching event, and not much in the way of anything I wanted to buy, but the weather was beautiful and it was enjoyable nevertheless.

Thankful to be home again, and looking forward to more with the new blog!

A New Year and I'm new to the world of blogging; My sister Lulu form 'DustyLu Interiors' encouraged me do it! Here I will share my ideas with you on decorating, cooking, love relationships and just about anything that has to do with the home. My foundation is God; I love my life and my family I am so excited to share them with you.
